Remembrance Day Service

On
Thursday 10th November a group of year 4, 5 and 6 children from
School Council went to Middlesbrough Cenotaph to take part in a special
Remembrance Day Service.
As we
walked there we thought about the many people who lost their lives fighting for
our country all those years ago.
When we
arrived at the Cenotaph, we were each given a cross with a poppy fixed to
it. The reason why we use poppies as a
symbol to help us remember is that they were the first type of flower to grow
on the soldiers’ graves in Flanders.

As the
service started, we saw and listened to representatives from the Navy, Sea
Cadets, War Veterans, the Bishop of Middlesbrough and many more.

Lots of
different primary and secondary school were also there. We were each called out in turn and then had
to place our cross with the poppy into the grass around the Cenotaph.

After
the service we went to look at the walls surrounding Albert Park (just next to
the Cenotaph) which feature the names of people from Middlesbrough who
died. We looked at the names to see if
there were any we recognised. Some of us
knew names from our family who were there and we looked for these.
