Yeast Investigation in Science Y5/6
During science this half
term we have been investigating micro-organisms and how some of them are
helpful whereas others can be harmful to us.
We looked at how one useful and helpful micro-organism was
‘yeast’ which we can find in bread. We
discussed how yeast was a rising agent and that without this helpful organism, our bread would stay flat and would not rise.
So, as an investigation to watch how yeast performs, we decided
to try making some bread buns.
First
we had to wash our hands to make sure we got rid of any harmful
micro-organisms.

Then we
put into a bowl, a measured amount of bread mix, water and yeast.

Then we
had to mix our ingredients together – this was a rather messy job!

We then
divided the mixture into equal amounts so that everyone in the class could kneed their own dough.
We knew that this was an important process because we needed to get rid
of any air bubbles.

We then
left the dough to settle for five minutes.
During this time we saw that the dough began to rise. Can you see the difference?

After
this we put them in the oven to cook for fifteen minutes. Don’t they look good?

Then it
was time for the taste test. We buttered
our buns and tried them. As you can see,
we thought that they looked delicious!

A very
tasty science experiment!
