Y5/6 Art Day
In Y5/6 our Autumn Term topic is all about ‘The Black
Death’. So far we have been learning
lots of facts about this and finding out what life was like for people living
at the time through out literacy, topic and ICT work.
For our art day, we decided to focus on pieces which would
continue to help us with our learning in this area.
In our classroom we had a carousel of activities happening
and most of us got the chance to take part in each activity.
Chalk Images
One of the activities we successfully completed was to
create chalk drawings of houses and homes from the ‘Stuart Period’ which was
around the time the ‘Plague’ would have taken place. In class we had already created pencil
drawings of specific features of these buildings and so now we had to put these
altogether.

Making Rats!
We learnt about how rats were thought to have spread the
plague because of the fleas they carried and because
of the low levels of sanitation at the time.
All of this meant that rats roamed the filthy streets and the fleas bit
humans who then caught the disease!
We made our rats by cutting out a rat template and then
colouring in the tail and face. We then
had to cut a length of wood into small pieces which we then glued onto our rats
bodies so that it would look like fur.
Not for the faint hearted!

Making Fire!
Since the Great Fire of London played a major part in
ending the plague, we decided to create some flames to put up as part of a
display in class.
To do this we used ‘Brusho
Inks’. We had tiny bits of various
shades of red, yellow and orange powder on our palette to start. We then dipped our brushes into water and
then put a tiny bit of the powder onto them.
Then we slowly swept our brushes across the cartridge paper (making sure
we stayed in one direction) to create our underlying ‘fire’ colour. We then slowly built up our shades and range
of colour until we had each created a piece of artwork which we could then cut
up to resemble flames.

Scenery Pieces
To help Y6 out with their performance, we also helped to
make some scenery for them to use in their play.
