Arts Policy

Sacred Heart RC Primary School offers its students a challenging and interesting curriculum that encourages them, as individuals, to achieve their fullest potential, and to develop the skills needed to face the future with confidence.

Our children are encouraged to use their initiative, to be inquisitive and creative, develop responsibility and independence, and enjoy all that they do.

As part of our belief in the equality of opportunity for every individual, we are committed to ensuring that all students have an arts entitlement.

Engagement in the Arts will vary according to age and individual talents but will include both active involvement and appreciation as a spectator.

Sacred Heart RC Primary School’s ethos strongly supports the Arts in all its forms, both in terms of curriculum time and extra-curricular activities.

We believe:

·        that all pupils, regardless of gender, ability, cultural or ethnic origin, have the right to experience the Arts in as broad a context as possible.

·        that every student should be taught to be creative and appreciative of the Arts and that this appreciation helps our students to develop a greater understanding of the world around them.

·        that the Arts allow students to investigate and explore both their own cultural heritage and those of other nationalities.

·        that the Arts can enhance a student’s understanding and learning within the curriculum. We acknowledge that students learn most effectively through a variety of media, including aural, visual and written and that, therefore, use of the Arts across the curriculum allows the teaching staff to employ a broad range of teaching strategies in their day-to-day work.

·        that these subjects allow students to develop their abilities and opportunities for self-expression, original thought, imagination and inventiveness.

·        that the Arts encourage skills of empathy, negotiation, co-operation and teamwork.

·        that the Arts allow students to develop their critical and evaluative skills in order to help others and also improve their own work.

·        that it is our job to widen the children’s experience of the Arts as an aesthetic, social, practical and enjoyable aspect of the curriculum.

·        that like Physical Education, the Arts curriculum provides routes to success for students who are less academically inclined. We believe in giving every student in our school the chance to shine and achieve wherever their talents lie. We give equal credit to successes achieved across the curriculum, thus allowing our students to grow daily in self esteem and confidence.

Aims

·        to value the Arts and to acknowledge their important place within our school.

·        to celebrate and share the success of student’s achievement in the Arts.

·        to ensure that all students including SEN pupils and the Gifted and Talented benefit from an entitlement in the Arts and have access to a broad and balanced range of arts activities.

·        to encourage ambitious Arts projects and to strive for continuous improvement in skills and creativity.

·        to encourage an interest in the Arts and a development of artistic appreciation.

·        to involve the wider community, including experts, whenever possible.

·        to value varied experiences from different cultures and traditions through the arts.

·        to encourage the use of technical vocabulary for the arts.

·        to provide the opportunity to achieve higher attainment in other curriculum areas through the Arts, including ICT, the Humanities, Literacy and Mathematics.

Objectives

·        to provide experiences in each of the Arts at all key stages including Foundation stage.

·        to raise self-esteem and appreciation of the Arts through class activities, performances, exhibitions and individual work.

·        to provide an exciting and varied program of extra-curricular activities.

·        to encourage and develop all students artistic talents and creativity by providing a range of Arts activities, music, dance, drama, art and design.

·        to develop strong links with a wide range of professionals and outside agencies in the field of The Arts.

·        to have focus Arts weeks to introduce, develop and enhance certain aspects of the curriculum through the Arts.

Focus Sessions

These sessions will focus the whole school on arts activities. Various themes, such as a country or a period in history, will be chosen and a wide range of activities offered to all pupils. These will include visits to school by various experts and professionals, workshops, performances and demonstrations. There may be visits to other schools or arts venues. These sessions will celebrated through display.

Facilities and Resources

We have a large Hall which is used for dance, drama, school productions, visiting arts practitioners, etc. We also have a few smaller rooms which can be used for group activities when necessary. We also have our own ICT Suite.

Outside Agencies

We already have links with local Arts agencies such as Tees Valley Arts, The Music Service, Dorman Museum and MIMA (Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art). We will continue to use these and will actively seek out other opportunities to liaise with professionals in the Arts.

Extra-curricular clubs

We aim to use staff, parental and local expertise in offering a wide range of arts based clubs at lunchtime and after-school. During the year these will include: dance, drama, recorders, choir, computer, arts and crafts. Each Key Stage will have a number of opportunities to attend something within the school year.

Cross-Curricular Planning

We use a cross-curricular approach to planning and the Arts play a prominent part in each terms work throughout the year. More details are available in subject Action Plans and individual Year Planning. These and the relevant assessments will provide the basis for future planning.

Monitoring

The Arts Co-ordinators will monitor Arts provision and review this policy.

Art and Design Policy

Introduction

Art and Design is a foundation subject of the National Curriculum. It is a subject which has natural cross-curricular links with other subjects and as such a large proportion of ‘art time’ will be linked to other areas of the curriculum.

Aims

In teaching Art and Design within the school, we are seeking to make pupils visually sensitive to the world around them, through their powers of observation and their ability to select, record and interpret what is seen, imagined or felt. We encourage our pupils to enjoy and experience art and design, gaining pleasure from them and in so doing foster their individual creativity.

Objectives

To implement the aims of our policy, pupils will have experience of/be taught skills in;

1.   Recording from experience, observation, memory and imagination.

2.   Exploring a range of starting points as a base for some aspects of practical work e.g. themselves, their experiences, stories, pictures, artefacts, preparatory sketches.

3.   Developing their manipulative skills and discovering the qualities and limitations of the range of materials and tools with which they are working.

4.   Exploring the basic elements of the subject – colour, form, line, pattern, shape, texture and tone.

5.   Increasing their awareness of art and design in their environment (both natural and manmade)

6.   Appreciating the work of other artists, craftspeople, and designers from other times, styles and cultures.

7.   Reflecting on and considering ways of developing their work.

8.   Making use of appropriate ICT skills in the context of their work.

9.   Expressing opinions of their own and others’ work and having value given to their feelings.

Methods of Teaching

Lessons are taught in order for pupils to learn and develop skills new to them, in order that they develop their own work. We encourage pupils to work individually, in small groups and as a whole class. This is at the discretion of the teacher and will relate to the task being undertaken. We value the use of QCA and LCP schemes of work and a variety of other resources which support delivery of our creative curriculum on a two year rolling programme.

Inclusion

For reference to general teaching requirements on inclusion ref SEN and Inclusion Policy.

With particular reference to this subject

We aim to provide effective learning opportunities for all our pupils. To overcome any potential barriers to learning in art and design we may need to provide:

·        alternative tasks to overcome any difficulties arising from specific religious beliefs relating to ideas and experiences they are expected to represent

·        access to stimuli, participation in everyday events and explorations, materials, word descriptions and other resources to compensate for a lack of specific first hand experiences and allow pupils to explore an idea or theme

·        alternative or adapted activities to overcome difficulties with manipulating tools, equipment or materials

·        help to manage particular types of materials to which they may be allergic

Health and Safety

We encourage pupils to use materials, tools and techniques for practical work in accordance with health and safety requirements.

Use of ICT.

Pupils will be given access to relevant paint and draw programs in order to develop their work. They will also be given access to use of digital equipment to record observations. Digital images may be used as starting points for their work.

Internet access is available for research into work of artists, craftspeople and designers.

Assessment and Review

Portfolios of work in art and design are kept for all pupils.

As we work to National Curriculum levels in all subjects within a prescribed range of levels it is a simple process to recognise how individual pupils are progressing. We are able to describe what we need to do next to take children’s learning in art and design forward. Ref Skills Ladder.

Each year pupils will produce a self-portrait as evidence of their skills progression. These will be kept in pupils’ portfolios.
