History
The History QCA Scheme of Work
is used as the basis of our medium term plans. This gives children the
opportunity to use a variety of hands-on resources and sources to gain
historical knowledge and understanding. The approach to history includes
group/creative work rather than individual work and recording. This encourages
the children to self-assess against the intended learning objective.
Wherever possible history-based
visits and visitors are planned to enhance this area of the curriculum. These
enable children to build, extend and consolidate their history topic.
Children start by looking at
themselves as babies, they learn about families, grandparents and family trees.
They concentrate on topics e.g. Toys – Now/Then, Transport, Homes Long Ago
Children at the end of KS1 should be able to distinguish which
stories are fact and which are fiction and they should have a sense of time and
chronology.
By the end of KS2 we aim to
arouse an interest in the past and give children an understanding of their own
roots and inheritance, through the development of historical knowledge and
skills.
