Personal, Social and Health Education and Citizenship

Sacred Heart School was awarded Healthy Schools status in 2004, Healthy School Standard in 2007 and Silver Award for Eco Schools. We have continued to concentrate on healthy lifestyles – eating and exercise - as well as personal hygiene issues. We have also continued to participate in the Free Fruit for Schools Scheme. This entitles Foundation Stage and KS1 children to a fresh piece of fruit each day.

Policy for Personal, Social and Health Education and Citizenship

1.   Sacred Heart RC Primary School agrees with the statement of values as laid down by the National Forum for Values in Education and the Community (Mrs MTL Loughlin has a copy).

2.   The aims of the school reflect these values and will be discussed by staff and governors annually and modified if necessary.

3.   These values are upheld in the school’s Behaviour Policy and Anti-Bullying Policy.

4.   These values will inform the scheme of work for the direct teaching of PSHE and will be supported by parts of the Maths, English, Science and Geography curriculum and in assemblies.

5.   All staff will promote opportunities for children to practise and experience these values.

·        Children will help to set the class rules at the start of each year. The rules will be displayed around in the classroom, in child-friendly, positive terms. Children and adults will be expected to adhere to these rules.

·        Children will receive ongoing encouragement, and adults will give children positive responses as they develop social skills.

·        Social and moral dilemmas will be considered during assemblies and in class time, both planned and in response to events or situations as they arise.

·        Children’s self-esteem will be taken into account when work is being marked.

·        ‘Sharing assemblies’ will be used to build self-esteem and encourage children to share in each other’s successes in work and behaviour.

·        Children will be encouraged and enabled to make choices at appropriate times, eg. when choosing books, partners, and playtime activities.

·        Activities to promote cooperative group work will be used when appropriate.

·        Opportunities for discussions and to meet people from different walks of life will be provided across all curriculum areas whenever possible.

·        Each term, children will be offered the opportunity to learn about and support a local, national or international charity.

·        Links with the parish, the local community and industry will be actively encouraged.

6.   The scheme of work for PSHE and citizenship shows the progress from the Foundation Stage into Key Stage 2 as a long-term plan. (This scheme of work is mainly based on the SEAL Scheme of Work.) The weekly sessions, including the use of circle time, are included in the medium-term planning for each year group. Teachers will record any unplanned teaching opportunities as they arise.

The School Council continues to provide the children with a voice within the school. Its representatives, from Y1 –Y6 meet regularly to discuss issues and problems arising in and around school and look at ways of solving them. It continues to be supported in its work by a group of adults from within the school and parish.
