The Ocean Maths Project
The emphasis of Ocean Maths is on enjoyment, exploration and
discovery. The activities make learning
maths fun, both for the children and their parents.
The work involves mathematical activities, games and puzzles to be
shared and solved by the child and the parent together, either at home, or in a
workshop at school.
The essence of the project is the sharing. The child feels supported and the parent
feels involved.

The Workshops
Workshops are held in school at the start of each term, led by
Mrs Gordon. The workshops will give you
lots of ideas and ways to work with your child at home. Many parents have found that the workshops
teach them that learning maths is interesting and fun.
Please don’t worry about the workshops. You do not need to know anything about maths
to be able to participate in them.
The workshops run for each year group. During the workshop you and your child will
sit together at a table. Together you
will solve all sorts of mathematical problems.
The problems will not be too difficult for you. They are set in the form of little games and
activities. Your role is to help your
child by asking them what they think about the problem and how you should
approach solving it. Share ideas with your
child, discuss the activity, getting them to explain
anything you do not understand. The aim
is to do the activities together. These
are similar to the ones in the homework that you and your child will do
together at home.

The Homework
Parts of the homework sheet are to be done by the child on his
or her own, but there is always at least one activity that your child is
expected to do with someone else. Your
child will already have been told by their teacher what they need to do.
The activities usually take between 5 minutes and 30
minutes. The homework sheets for primary
school homework always have a game to play, conventional tasks such as
calculations and a practical activity that parents and children can do
together. This could be something like
looking at clocks at home and recording what times they say.
Usually there are five lots of homework sent home per term, on
average one every two weeks. Please
check the homework page for the dates this year.

Resource Pack
We provide each pupil with a resource pack. In these packs there is a range of maths
equipment for children to use at home.
Please ensure that your child takes care of the pack as there is a
charge if they need replacing. It is
essential that pupils return the pack each Monday with their completed
homework.
Numeracy homework for most classes is usually given on a weekly
basis and may consist of written, oral practice and/or games.
We’ve had a lot of positive feed back
from the previous sessions some quotes are below:
From parents
‘It’s marvellous. I enjoy
attending the sessions because I’m learning too.’
‘A fun way of learning maths.’
‘A great idea. I
was able to see how they work their maths out at school.’
‘I think it’s a brilliant idea and the children enjoy it as
well.’

From pupils
‘It was good. Sometimes it’s
hard, but fun.’
‘Good. It was fun.’
‘Educational.’
‘Fun and interesting.’

Let’s make maths fun!
