Medical Matters
In the event of an accident or injury,
staff trained in First Aid will care for the child and if necessary seek
further advice. These injuries will then be noted in the accident book.
Parents will be contacted if their child
suffers a head injury. If it is not possible to contact parents a note will be
sent home with the child.
We ask parents to provide us with
emergency numbers so that they can be notified if their child becomes ill or
injured during the school day and needs to be sent home. (Please make sure any
changes to address or telephone numbers are given to the office as soon as
possible.)
Those children who are taking a course
of medication for colds and minor illnesses must be given their medication at
home before and after school. If parents wish they may administer medication
themselves at lunchtime.
Except in very rare circumstances
medicines cannot be administered by staff owing to health and safety
considerations. Prescribed medicines can be administered by the Headteacher if
full instructions are given to her in writing.
Asthmatic children should leave
inhalers in school and a form should be completed, and returned to the
Headteacher, detailing the required dosage and times when they should be used.
Children should be taught to use the inhalers independently. It is the
responsibility of parents to ensure that forms are kept up to date and inhalers
are replaced when necessary.
The school nurse has contact with the
school every week. If you have any problems she can be contacted through the
school secretary.
All pupils have a full medical
examination in their 5+ year and parents are invited to be present.
Sight and hearing are examined at
regular intervals after a child’s fifth birthday.
The area health authority dentist
visits to examine the pupil’s teeth. Children who need attention will be given
a letter for their own dentist or asked to attend the School Dental Clinic.
It is now the duty of all parents to
regularly examine their child’s hair for head lice. We recommend that this
should be done daily. The school nurse assistant can be contacted at school for
advice or support on this subject.
The school has a positive attitude towards educating children to understand, respect and be responsible for their own bodies. A series of lessons and videos are shown to Y6 pupils covering topics such as Health and Hygiene, Puberty and Drugs. The parents of these pupils will have the opportunity to view the videos prior to them being shown to the pupils.
